Clinical Observations on Empyema Thoracis

Abstract
Clinical observaticrs were made cn the 44 cases cf tl.cracic cmp3erra aamittcd and treated at the 36 th Army Hospital during the rericd from Cctcfcr 1963 to CctcFer 1966..
1. All the patients observed were soldiers, and 57% were soldiers entered the army service less than 1 year, 81. 81% were frcm rural area and 81% were rcn-educated or under educated.
2. Causative organisms were staphyleccccus in 36.3%acid fast bacilli in 36.3% and citbers were mixed infections.
3. Treatment of the empyema thoracics were drair_eged. decortication, pleurcpneumetectcmy and thoracoplasty according to the state of empyema sac and regional inflammation.
4. Postoperative result was excellent except 2cascs cf ccmplicaticrs, bronchopleural fistulae after pleuropneumonectomy which were treated well with secondary operation.
